The seat of the Anglican Bishop of Carlisle, Carlisle Cathedral was founded as an Augustinian monastery, possibly on the foundations of an earlier church in 1123 and became a cathedral in 1133.
Carlisle Cathedral Precinct is an English Heritage Scheduled Ancient Monument.
