This rather unusual mosaic made from glass smalti (opaque glass tiles, sometimes referred to as Byzantine glass mosaic tiles) can be found above the corner entrance to the Loyds TSB Branch on the corner of Lothian Road and Fountainbridge in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The motto reads Thrift is Blessing_, a quote from William Shakespeare’sShakespeare The Merchant of Venice – Shylock says it as part of a defence of his profession of money lending. The quotation is quite apt considering it is above the door to a bank.
