Artist's Description

Taken during the Edinburgh, Scotland RB meet (13 Nov 2010).

Tenement buildings in the Cowgate viewed from Greyfriars Kirkyard.

Towering over the buildings is the tall black Gothic spire of The Hub – the highest point in central Edinburgh, now the home of the Edinburgh International Festival, and a central source of information on all the Edinburgh Festivals.

The name, Cowgate is derived from the fact that cows were herded down it for Edinburgh’s market days in previous centuries (gate being a Scots term for “street”).

This area is part of the lower level of Edinburgh’s Old Town, which is partly built around the elevated streets of South Bridge and George IV Bridge.

The Hub is an Historic Scotland Category A Listed Building (HB Number 27542).

The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
