It is almost impossible to capture a street view of Princes Street in the New Town of Edinburgh, Scotland without including a bus in the shot.

Shot from Waterloo Place, looking West along Princes Street, if you look carefully, you may be able to make out that there are seven buses in this shot.

On the left is the Balmoral Hotel. Also in the shot is the Scott Monument, the gothic spire which is the monument to Sir Walter Scott.

The Balmoral Hotel is an Historic Scotland Category B Listed Building (HB Number 30315).

The Scott Monument is an Historic Scotland Category A Listed Building (HB Number 27829).

The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Love this with the monument in the back….when we went to visit many moons ago – I’d hoped to reclimb it….only to find it all in pieces, being cleaned!!

  • Thank you Wendi. They had to close it years ago when they found that the smoky atmosphere that was once the norm in Edinburgh was destroying the sandstone that the monument is built of. It is OK now and it is open to the public to climb again.

A relief they were able to save it…. the sandstone is so incredibly soft – could see that in the cemeteries with so many headstones having eroded.
