The Last Drop is a popular pub in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh, Scotland.

The name does not refer to a drink as you may think, but rather it eludes to the fact that until as recently as the 1800s, public hangings used to take place in the Grassmarket, opposite today’s location of the pub.

Before the invention of the modern Gallows, hangings were a crude affair, just a rope over a tree branch, a barrel to stand on and a stout man to kick the barrel away. The prisoner would be offered a last drop (of whisky_) from the Last Drop (pub_) before suffering a last drop (at the end of a rope).

Taken while out for a pleasant days shooting on a lovely Spring day (8th May 2010) with some other RB members.

The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fabulous capture and colour contrast, and interesting although a little scary history lol

  • Thank you kindly trudi, but you have no idea, the history of Edinburgh is steeped in blood; massacres, battles, murderers, grave robbers and much more …

Will be visiting in September for a week, would love some gory places to visit makes it more interesting lol

  • You will be spoiled for choice, Edinburgh is an easy city to get around, it is very compact, you really can walk everywhere.

Shame that you are coming in September, I will be on holiday in Greece, however, I’m sure there will be lots more RB folk who would love to meet you.
