Corfu Town on the beautiful Greek Island of Corfu is a wonderful place with a rich and varied history. Over the centuries, it has been ruled by many outsiders, including the Romans, Normans, Venetians, French and British.
This view is from the top of the old citadel (Palaio Frourio, literally: Old Fortress (Παλαιό Φρούριο)) which stands atop a rocky island on the east side of Corfu Town. The Fort is quite extensive and has expansive views of the town.
In the centre of the shot, the tree lined open space is the town’s main esplanade or Spianada.
One of the things the British left was Cricket (the only place in Greece you will find it), which was played on the pitch opposite the Liston (Λιστόν) in the old part of Corfu Town. Sadly today, due to nearby parked cars, they no long play in this famous location. When this shot was taken in September 2002, you can just make out a cricket match in progress on the green on the right.
At the top right of the shot (north end of Corfu town) is the massive 16th Century New Fort.
Corfu is the most northerly of the Grecian Ionian Islands. It is a green and beautiful place where the pace of life is not too taxing.
The Old Town of Corfu is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
