A panoramic view from West Princes Street Gardens taking in the enormity of Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle is unequalled in the whole of the British Isles.
There has been a defensive settlement on the Castle Rock since 600 A.D. and excavations beginning in the late 1980s within Edinburgh Castle have proved what was long suspected—that the Castle Rock has been occupied since about 1000 B.C. making it one of the oldest known European settlements. Over three thousand years of history sit on top of the famous Edinburgh rock.
