Looking over Linlithgow Loch to Linlithgow Palace, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland.

Occupying a prominent position beside Linlithgow Loch, the palace is one of Scotland’s best known historic buildings.

Although designated as a Royal Palace, this imposing fortification qualifies as a defensive Castle and was built to be just that.

The first royal residence was established on this site in the 12th century; the present palace was started for King James I in 1425. James V was born here in 1512, and, by the time of the birth of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1542, the building had taken its present form.

Bonnie Prince Charlie was entertained here in 1745; a year later, after having been occupied by soldiers of the Duke of Cumberland, the palace was gutted by fire and has remained a noble ruin ever since.

Like it Tom.I should be uploading but fancied a trip up your way, in virtual mode.I feel the link. Bonnie PC had an illegitimate daughter who is buried near here!! Did you know?

  • Glad you like the shot mate. Linlithgow is where I was born and raised, so I love the history of this place. Bonnie Prince Charlie had several illegitimate children, but only Charlotte survived past infancy. She spent most of her life in French convents until she was finally reconciled with her father. It is unlikely that she would ever have travelled to scotland.

Fine shot of this historic pile. Linlithgow has the ultimate claim on Mary, Queen of Scots; have visited a number of places associated with her, some the real thing, some suspect, but this is the real deal!

  • It certainly is the real deal Sheila. I was born and raised in Linlithgow so I took all this history for granted when I was younger …
