The dove of peace on top of the war memorial at Gialos (or Yialos) harbour in the town of Symi on the beautiful Greek Island of Symi.
It commemorates the surrender of the Dodecanese Islands to Allied forces by the German forces at the end of World War 2. The surrender was concluded in one of Symi’s waterfront tavernas.
Symi is a member of the Dodecanese group of Greek islands and lies 24 nautical miles to the north east of the Island of Rhodes.
