Artist's Description

Built in the middle of the 13th century, Clifford’s Tower is all that remains of the former York Castle in the City of York, North Yorkshire, England.

The tower takes its name from Roger de Clifford who was executed for treason against Edward II and hanged in chains from the tower walls in March 1322.

The City of York was originally named Eboracum by the Roman founders in 71 AD.
