The Old Citadel (Palaio Frourio, literally: Old Fortress (Παλαιό Φρούριο)). The Citadel stands atop a rocky island on the east side of Corfu Town on the beautiful Greek Island of Corfu. Fortifications were built on this site as early as the 6th century although the majority of what is left today is from the Venetian rule during the 14th century and later the English rule during the mid 1800s. The site was initially a peninsula but the Venetians dug a moat to convert it into an island for greater security.
The Fort is quite extensive and has expansive views of the town and the incredibly clear water in Garitsa Bay. A lighthouse stands at the highest point in the Fortress.
