Seen from the Giudecca Canal, tourists gather at the furthermost point of the Punta della Dogana, the wedge-shaped peninsular at the entrance to the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.

In the centre of the shot you can see Charles Ray’s 8 foot tall white steel sculpture of a boy playing with a frog. Simple called Boy With Frog. Sadly, after standing there for four years, the statue was removed from this location on May 8th, 2013.

The whole of Venice and its Lagoon is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I’m intrigued… he certainly stands (stood?) out in a crowd, & I can’t imagine the repro lamppost filling that space with anything like this drama. Close-up images of Ray’s sculpture are captivating as well, though your shot, showing him in context, is subtle & has that inimitable Venetian feel. From what I’ve read, The Boy’s ultimate destination is up in the air. I loved what Ray said when it was suggested that the Boy be moved to the Palazzo Grassi… something like ‘It would look as if he took a stroll….’ After which he nixed the notion. You have doubtless seen this. Poor ‘little’ fellow….

  • Thank you so much Sheila, it is an interesting statue but it was always controversial and many people thought it was too new and not in keeping with the ancient site it occupied …
