Artist's Description

Narrowboats and small pleasure crafts moored in the Canal Basin at The Falkirk Wheel, at Tamfourhill, a suburb of Falkirk in Central Scotland.

The Falkirk Wheel is a unique rotating boat lift which links the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal. Historically, the two canals had been joined at Falkirk by a flight of 11 locks that stepped down across a distance of 1.5km, but these were dismantled in 1933, breaking the link.

In five and a half minutes, the wheel can lift two canal boats at the same time, along with the water they are floating in, 35m (115ft) from the Forth and Clyde Canal to the level of the Union Canal.
