Right place…right time. That’s what good photography is all about.
Having your camera with you and knowing how to use it helps too!
The central framing of the spotlit boat works well here, and it looks great with the black frame around it.

You are absolutely right, right place, right time. As an enthusiastic amateur, most of my “good” shots are accidents of good fortune. I leave it to the proffessionals to stage their shots or wait for the right moment to get the result they desire (nothing wrong with that, it’s what they do). In this case, we were on a cruise ship leaving Istanbul. I could see how amazing the sky was and was happily snapping away as we steamed along. Most of the shots were poor (or at least not what I hoped for, but given the circumstances, it was not possible to be in complete control) I was pleased when a couple came out with enough wow factor to be worthy of sharing.

That’s a pleasure Tom, it’s a nice, atmosperic image.
Don’t do yourself out of the credit for it though. “Right place, right time” is not the same as an “accident of good fortune”. Was it Jack Nicklaus that said “It’s strange how the more I practice, the luckier I get”?
It’s not about luck, it’s about making the extra effort to be there (getting out of bed for sunrise rather than lying in for an extra hour, researching the right time to be at a particular location to have the light in the right place, or in this case standing on deck while the sun went down rather than sipping a cocktail in the bar), it all counts as making the right choice to be in the right place at the right time.
You make your own luck.
