Greyfriars Bobby

Immortalised in a small statue just at the top of Candlemaker Row in Edinburgh, Scotland, the story of the Skye Terrier (Greyfriars Bobby) is world famous.

Bobby belonged to John Gray, who worked for the Edinburgh City Police as a night watchman, and the two were inseparable for about two years. Then, on the 15th February 1858, Gray died of Tuberculosis. He was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, in the Old Town of Edinburgh. Bobby is said to have spent the next 14 years sitting on his master’s grave leaving only to eat. When the winter weather was realy bad, Bobby would spend the night in one or other of the houses around the Kirkyard.

Greyfriars Bobby, Scotland’s most famous dog, is not forgotton. After Bobby’s death, the President of the Ladies Committee of the RSPCA, Baroness Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, asked the City Council for permission to erect a granite fountain with a statue of Bobby placed on top. A statue was commissioned and sculpted by William Brodie 1815- 1881 and unveiled in November 1873 opposite the Kirkyard, on the corner of Candlemakers Row and King George IV Bridge.

The statue of Greyfriars Bobby is an Historic Scotland Category A Listed monument (HB Number 27899).

The sense of generosity and commitment are woven throughout your story Tom. First, the beautiful Terrier who was dedicated to his master and then to the Baroness for asking for a feature for her community that showed the love and dedication from one to another. This speaks volumes. Your image is endearing and so correct in it’s presentation!!!! A fave…. this warms my heart!!!

Thank you kindly dear Brenda. The story is heartwarming. The Walt Disney film about Bobby is worth seeing. It is somewhat inaccurate in many details (Artist license I supose), but it is still a real tear jerker

Wee Bobby; superb capture Tom although I have to say he looks a bit brass’d off or should that be bronzed off!! I like the bit of the story which is always left out. That’s the bit that explains the real reason behind wee Bobby’s vigil. When they buried John Gray he still owed wee Bobby a half penny!! And they say us Scot’s are mean!!!!

  • Tom Gomez replied 19 days ago

Ah niver kent thit Auld Joak still owed a wee bawbee tae Bobby, nae wuner the wee dug stied close …

I love Greyfriars Bobby and have two books about him. By the way, please forgive me if I don’t comment on every photo, but I find it difficult to keep up, but I do think they are all wonderful. As I do drawings and paintings I find it difficult to upload one a week,.

  • Tom Gomez replied 16 days ago

No worries Dave, glad you like the shot …
