The Vennel steps link the Grassmarket with Lauriston Place. The word “Vennel” derives from the French word “Venelle” (little street).

    Thank you so much Joanne. The patch of light is at Brown’s Place. Because there is a gap where the houses are set back from the Vennel, the sunlight was streaming across the steps at that point …
