Down and Out in Edinburgh

Down and Out in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a beautiful city and life can be very good. It is one of the major Banking and Financial capitols of the world.

The National Gallery of Scotland, just behind the sleeping figure, is testament to the fact that the arts and culture are alive and well in this lovely city, but as in every city, there are the misplaced and unfortunate souls who find that there is no place for them and are forced to live out their lives on the streets.

Spare a moment, and if you can, spare a little cash to help those less fortunate than ourselves, for there, but for the grace of God, go we all …

Taken at The Mound during the very enjoyable redbubble meet in Edinburgh, Scotland on 26th April 09. It was a great day out with a bunch of very talented photographers.

For a tighter view of the sleeper, have a look at Beauty Sleep, an excellent image from Rachael Macleod. Check out Rachael’s work, you will not be disappointed.

A really moving shot Tom, we should all help if we can, no-one else seems to be bothered especially the government

  • Tom Gomez replied

You are almost right Iain, Government and Councils do care, but only to the extent that they would like to sweep this problem under the carpet. They are not willing to make the investment required to address the problem properly.

There are so many young people on the streets now, you would think that we are a third world country. It was never like this when I was young.

Superb reportage & artwork Tom. Sadly though you can never be sure they are down & out. Working in Edinburgh for 20 years it wouldn’t be the 1st time I’ve seen a down & out pick up their begging bowl walk off & jump into a posh car & drive off. Some of them make a good living from begging.

There is talk of another meet in 3 or 4 weeks time. It will probably be in South Queensferry where I live (details still to be worked out). You would be most welcome if you are able to come.

    sad, yet beautiful …

  • Tom Gomez replied

Thank you Coinna, it is sad, but the number of homeless and displaced young people seems to be on the increase. The breakdown of the traditional family units along with an uncaring Government seems to be to blame …
