Chorio
Chorio, the old capital of the island of Halki, with 4,000 inhabitants in its heyday, was gradually abandoned and is now quite deserted and mostly in ruins, although it was once the only settlement on Halki.
Chorio is built around the hill upon which the remains of the fortress stands (the Kastro, the castle of the medieval Knights of St John), and has some interesting old style stone houses. The town was built in a position concealed from view from the sea, and high above the initial maraudings of pirates.
Halki is a small yet very charming island in the Dodecanese that is situated opposite the west coast of Rhodes.

O yes, you are the master, this another fabulous piece Tom..This really makes me want to visit….

It is an amazing little Island Jason, very beautiful and soooo friendly. Perfect place for the more mature traveller, but not so good for chldren or teens (no swimming pools, no discos, no water parks, no watersports). The hardest decision of the day was deciding which of the 8 restaurants to have dinner in.

Beautiful Tom

Makes me wonder why did people abandon such a beautiful place?
Tom Gomez replied
The main employment on the Island was sponge diving, but the sponges failed and so people moved away from the Island. Many immigrated to Australia and the USA. As there was no longer a threat from pirates, the remaining population (approx 350) moved to the only other settlement (Emborio) which has a good harbour. Much of the stone from the houses of Chorio was used to build the houses of Emborio.
