Duntulm Castle

Duntulm Castle

Duntulm Castle looking out over Tulm Island and the hills of Harris in the distance.

Duntulm Castle stands ruined on the north coast of the Isle of Skye in Scotland near the hamlet of Duntulm.

The main structure of the castle, about 25 metres by 4.5 metres, was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. A tower was added in the 17th century and an additional house, 10 by 5 metres, a little later still.

The castle was abandoned in the early 1730s. According to one local legend, the castle was abandoned after the infant son of the chieftain who dwelt there at the time, in the charge of a nursemaid, fell from a window and was dashed on the rocks below. As a punishment, the nursemaid was set adrift on the North Atlantic in a small boat.

The ruins of the castle are now in very poor condition.

Sometimes referred to in Gaelic poetry and song as Eilean a’ Cheò (The Misty Isle), Skye is renown for its natural beauty, history and wildlife.

  • Tom Gomez replied

I wasn’t sure about posting this one in Castle Magic as there is very little left of the castle. But the story is interesting, so I thought people may like to know about it.

What a great location, the ruins are beautiful & the backdrop – couldn’t have asked for better really, they sure chose a nice place to build. Sad story though … and isn’t Skye renowned for its Drambuie (oops, or is that just by us imbibers?)

  • Tom Gomez replied

Actually, Talisker single malt is the only whisky distilled on Skye.
Drambuie is produced in Broxburn, a town about 5 mles from where I live in Lowland Scotland.

Sorry Kelly, afraid not, it was a miserable day, the wind was howling and the rain was on and off (luckily off at that moment).
