“Beauty, creativity, nature, and… beauty.”

A simple concept but the depth to what motivates freelance artist, Tom Cosic, unravels as one peruses his accomplishments.

Quietly spoken and unassuming, Cosic is almost too shy to offer opinions on his own art with words. The hustle and bustle of the busy street only metres away doesn’t seem to register as the introverted artist sinks into the comfy leather couch of the quiet café. Being more absorbed in the moment he shares with his coffee and cheesecake than the interview, it appears that each experience becomes all-consuming to the man that humbly earns a living from his talents. And for someone who is undeniably highly talented, it seems amazing that he has existed for so long under the radar and out of the spot light of popular culture.

Earthing himself in the rainforest village of Kuranda in Tropical North Queensland, Cosic has been an established freelance artist for over 20 years, specialising in paintings that draw on Australia’s natural beauty to capture a wide variety of audiences. Even though he is often commissioned to paint for a purpose, Cosic often finds himself creating art for Art’s sake.

“Beauty is often the only goal, regardless of initial intentions. I find it hard to continue a project if I can’t see Beauty in it somehow.” Indeed after viewing his portfolio Beauty becomes so obvious a theme that it seems unavoidable, leaving the audience actively searching in anticipation for another version in the next art piece.

Cosic manipulates lighting, reflection, perspective and colour to develop a singular spin on all his work. He prefers emphasising in insightful simplicity aspects of society that are often overlooked and undervalued rather than the glittering jewels of popular culture. This quiet painter’s main goal in expression is to provoke emotion more than thought. So when restrictions are removed what feeling does Cosic prefer to leave his audience with?

“Peace,” simple and profoundly effective in today’s culture of accelerated schedules.

Having studied Fine Art at Queensland College of Art Cosic specialises in photo realism, detailed illustration, photography, and computer graphics. During the 90s Cosic was based in Europe for a short while and travelled across the globe to complete commissioned art pieces. One of Cosic’s favourite clients is that of Hogs Breath, supplying almost all iconic Boss Hog murals nation wide. The Australian Government has also sourced illustrations from the peaceful artist for visually striking impressions and illustrations. More recently Cosic has completed piece work for international fashion labels such as DC and Ripcurl.

And it doesn’t seem to matter what surface his clients request his work on either. Cosic manages to infuse life into his art regardless of whether it is an outback scene on a safari bus, or the vibrant coral sanctuary of the clown fish on a tightly woven canvas. Colourful contrasts are coupled with simplicity and realism to produce the desired outcome for each client. Cosic applies pixels and paint to create images that appeal to the more beautiful side of commercial art, colourful contrasts coupled with simplicity and realism to produce a new perspective on ageless themes.
