    Hi Tom…I really like your work..very impressive…so how long does it take you to do a piece like this….how did you come across a tusk that old?...It’s all hand painted…is a glaze that you would fire on or what?...Just interested in your work….How much would a piece like this cost?

    Margaret, it took me about four weeks to hand carve it from a three foot tusk that I got from a dealer in washington state,It was 90% useable.I use Higgins fade proof Ink and I scrimshaw the polished Ivory and the ink sinks in permanently. No fire is used but I do seal it with about ten coats on each side. this is my favorite piece but some thing similar would run from 500 dollars and up. thanks for your kind comments.

    thanks pamela, I just stared doing this full time about three months ago, I retired from the police dept In 1989, and sterted a sucessful investigating and executive protection company in LA . I sold it 2003 and could never keep anything long enough to take it to a fair.This year I hope to make an extra 20 to 30 pieces and jury for some fairs in california in 2010.
