I saw the sight on Athens streets,
Men, fine men, dressed in green,
With bags packed, ready for all
All over streets and stations to be seen
As I walked by, daring no photograph
And down the subway was the sight
Among the passengers on the subway
More men in cap and uniform, starched and white.
Britain, before the Normandy landings
Saw such similar scenes of men
Assembling, proud in uniform
And will see the same in time again….
And maybe in time, Ireland too
If certain people have their ways
Shall have such people assemble in uniform
That for a passing poet prays.
On seeing a mobilisation of Greek soldiers and Navy on the streets and Subways of Athens, I wrote this poem…
