Doorkeep
Lexington, Virginia is a lovely place to live. It has long had a gracious, genteel flavor and has held the name of, “the Athens of the South” since the Civil War. There is a portion to the east of town however, that is known to locals as “Diamond Hill”. Small homes with small yards built during the Victorian era and situated on steep and narrow streets, The tone here is different, informal and wearily friendly; its made up of renting college students and long time black families.
I often walk along the streets here hoping that fate would offer up the makings of a painting. It was on such an occasion that I saw this dog watching me with tremendous self-possession while her owner worked at renovations on the other side of a glass fronted door. Fresh water was in an old pan next to a dinged washing machine and I was soon held in canine indifference as I sketched the basis for this watercolor painting.
Transparent watercolors on paper, Arches 300lb. HP
