Ecce Homo

Thomas Akers

Ecce Homo

I encountered this man after he detrained at the old railway station in Staunton, Virginia, Woodrow Wilson’s boyhood hometown. Obviously from another place and tired, he agree to allow me to record him quickly if he, ”...didn’t have to smile.” He was exotic in this southern mountain town but typical of many now in our changing world. His tiredness made him transparent and his humanity was on his sleeve. Stoic and representative I recalled Antonio Ciseri’s magnificent painting and the dialog on power implicit in that work and considered its meaning. “Ecce Homo, Behold the Man.”
