Rainbow in Rust
Oil on wood; 24×48 inches.
The painting is of a town here in the Appalachian chain that is slowly returning to the earth. The sun has just returned following a freshet; its heat turning the freshly thrown rain into a steamy mist that rises slowly like church incense carrying tired prayers that will not be answered.
One is looking across the vacant rail yard towards the Blue Ridge and nature seems about to advance and seize the last scraps left by men. The town was once know as, “The Pittsburgh of the South”, it is far from that title now. It is instead a little remembered relative, a mild bother who is left alone to die in their cluttered room.

Beautiful artwork, glorious imagery and colour, and so very well rendered.

I like how the road disappears into the scenery there and how real the cars are. It is also significant to me that though full of cars and obviously someone lives there there’s not one single person is on the street.
When viewed larger I wasn’t able to tell if the red by the blue trucks was a little girl in a red dress or an orange cone. I decided on orange cone :-)
Your commentary as always starts off strong and ends just as strong. Wonderful work.

I don’t know how many towns that look just like this one I’ve driven through, but somehow you captures the soul of them. You ability to portray American scenery in such a memorable way still amazes me. Excellent work Tom.

The beauty and truth of this wonderful painting brings a lump to my throat … not only have you captured the scene wonderfully but the incredible distance you have put into the painting enhances the concept of past and present. I am totally blown away by this work
