Long ago Simon Benson had the lumber business but he was troubled by his men didn’t return to work from Portland after they shipped the lumbers. He discovered they stopped by taverns to get water and there weren’t no other places they could then. Consequently they got too drunk to go back to work.
So Benson donated several drinking fountains to the city. The fountain has provided the thirst quench to the Portlanders ever since.
Well this is the legend the most Portlanders know but i just painted it because I wanted to paint like one of Gordon Park’s “Dove in the park” scene.
