Sun is setting in Horton Bay. All is quite except for the cries of a baby seal pup.
As we arrived at our dock by boat, the seal approached us looking for it’s mother or simply for a meal. As my partner called animal rescue for directions, I placed a piece of plywood in the ocean stabilizing it with a yellow paddle. It crawled on to the sheet then attempted to feed off the paddle. It was clearly in distress.
This is an image of it swimming around our dock looking for mom.
We did capture it and delivered it by boat – in the dark of night – to an awaiting animal rescue vessel 5 miles up the coast. A sweet finish to warm summer’s night.
A call from the rescue centre informed is that she was 8 pounds underweight, near death, and is doing just fine.
