Eye of the beholder

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder?
Having recently run my own gallery for 2 months…
I have discovered that if I produce a piece of work which I believe will be “universally” loved then it generally generates a “Oh look at that it’s beautiful” response however no one buys it… they just leave kind comments… My dark pieces however result in people expressing their outrage, disgust, some viewers even leave screaming… and then someone walks in and says “God I love that… can I buy it?”
And so beauty really is in the eye of the beholder…
