FACEBOOK now owns copyright to your content that you post on Facebook

What? How did that happen?

In February 2009 Facebook changed it’s Terms Of Service, that advises you that they now own any content forever that you post to your account, even if you delete the work, or delete your account.

I just found out about this last night after reading a blog post on the issue.
Zuckerberg On Who Owns User Data On Facebook

After reading this, I deleted my photos and artwork and a bunch of other stuff.

If you are a Facebook user, stand up and express your opinion. How?
Become a fan of Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook and express your opinion about this change.

In my mind, these changes to the TOS are absurd and devious.

I agree and it’s now confirmed my great impulse to stay well clear of facebook. I’ve just always had this feeling of detest and now that feeling has been confirmed.

Thank you for taking the time to let others know of this outright violation and for protecting other artists. Good on you!

  • Terry Krysak replied

Thanks Tahnja, I felt it was important.

oh really…. i have my art linked to my facebook account now that is a worry then..thanks for the info.

  • Terry Krysak replied

I deleted all links to my artwork, with the exception of the URL’s to Redbubble etc, which just point people in the direction to find you. I hope that this will be sufficient.

I agree that these TOS are devious!
I did a little research and read the TOS, and you are right.
In fact I have DEACTIVATED (notice that one cannot DELETE) my account at Facebook. I don’t like their controlling attitude—and Google is becoming the same way.
    Thanks for the heads up!

Unfortunately it doesnt matter if you remove your work or close/delete your account. They still have your data and it now belongs to them. Period. AND I AM BEYOND PISSED OFF!

What about if your account is marked private? Only my friends can see my photos and that is the way it will stay unless I send a link to any friend not on the site! But surely this is the same whatever site you submit photos to I don’t know but it is a tad confusing!! We did find this link however ! http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10165190-36.html!
Hope that works not best at links me!!

I heard about it on the news just this morning and you can read about it here….
    News Link Facebook here:
I’ve deactivated my account all ready. I think this was sneaky and underhanded and while I apperciate their need to archive some of the material posted there, for them to claim some usage right to any of the images on FaceBook is in my mind legally wrong unless I gave them permission to use them.

Oh my gosh thank you sooo much…I have a ton of work on there….will delete ASAP…......so appreciate the heads up!

Technically, agreeing to their totalitarian terms of service is the same as giving them permission to use your writing and images in any way they see fit. You upload images and writings “at will”. If you read the fine print on many websites, there are “usage rights” that you sign over to them just by joining. “Personals” websites are typically the worst about it. You are required to upload a photo when you join. However, by agreeing to the TOS (that many don’t bother reading), they now have the right to use any images you upload to “promote” their website. The FaceBook thing is new to me. They don’t “own the copyright” on your pictures and writings per se, but their TOS now allows them “unlimited usage rights” to your pictures and writings in any way they see fit. I’ll be editing my FaceBook account shortly. I can’t delete my account, but I can remove most of the information.

will deleting your artworks there be good enough…or will they still have them aftert the delete?

  • Terry Krysak replied

The new TOS changes state that work that is deleted will still be archived on one or more of their servers forever.

Facebook has been quite a pain in the ass from the start…AND NOW?? Deleting your werx, from your account WONT stop them from using that data…

FYI – You should be careful but also note, they DO NOT OWN copyright and if you set your profile to private the privacy rights override everything else and they cannot use your images.

  • Terry Krysak replied

Having checked, there does not appear to be an option to set your profile to “private”. All I can find is the ability to select who can see you profile and stuff, and I chose “Only my friends”.

    Terms of Use Update
    Close

A couple of weeks ago, we posted an update to our Terms of Use that we hoped would clarify some parts of it for our users. Over the past couple of days, we have received a lot of questions and comments about these updated terms and what they mean for people and their information. Because of the feedback we received, we have decided to return to our previous Terms of Use while we resolve the issues that people have raised.

  • Terry Krysak replied

Thanks, I just got a tweet about this on Twitter, Facebook backs down and has changed back to old TOS

Too late to be pressing delete on your computer they have all that they want. This is the major problem with trusting people who are out to make money and not caring about the people they are suppose to be serving.
Very strange situation and the owners reply was just as lame!
If they were really interested in you then his reply should of been we will retract the policy.
Be careful with your work I just put a link to my sites if I am gonna join a group like face book.
Then your work stays where it should be in a place you created.
    Good luck to all!

OOh great ! I only have flash panels at facebook for all my shops and links.I dont put work up there as it can be right clicked and copied …I just use facebook to play and promote the odd t-shirt. I use lots of other sites like plumdrop and blogs .like wordpress to get more exposure ..Facebook has so many viruses and was the cause of me losing all my work a month ago and im still trying to catch up,,,...Still I will keep my facebook for now.as far as i can see its not posing a huge threat to me as long as i only stick to the few games and friends i have there…like I said…facebook is for playing not for serious stuff like your work …..same goes for other social sites like myspace..
I also have a deviantart account but i dont use it much because of the same problem everything is right clickable and you can save other peoples work .so for me its not secure enough ..

  • Terry Krysak replied

I agree, but anything that you can see on your computer screen can be copied.
