Griffin

A mystical and magical creature said to build its nest in the mountains and line it with gold and attributed as an attribute of understanding the relationship between psychic energy and cosmic force, as well as being the guardian to the pathway to spiritual enlightenment. This solar hybrid creature, combines the head, claws and wings of an eagle with the body of a lion, symbolizing rulership of air and land and together making a double emblem of the Sun’s power and usually shown next to a ‘tree of life’ or similar symbol as the guardian of the sun and seasons.
The Griffin has been a forceful motif since the second millineum BCE in western Asia, later in the Middle East, Greece and eventually Europe. It was a Hebrew symbol of Persia, had demonic significance in Assyria, but seems in Crete to have played a protective role in palace decoration. In Greece, where the griffin was sacred to Apollo, to Athene as wisdom and to Nemesis as retribution, legend said they guarded the gold of India and of the Scythians. In early Christianity iconography the griffin was used to symbolize the forces of persecution, vengeance or hindrance. But from the 14th century it emerges as an emblem of the dual nature of Christ – human and divine – and of courageous vigilance, which was its usual meaning in heraldry.

I am fascinated by the archetypal and universal qualities of the symbology of Griffins which you have depicted here so powerfully. Recently I learned more about the Chinese PiXiu, which bears great similarities, being alaso a hybrid beast imbued with great powers, and images can show variation in the number of horns, or the presence or absence of wings. The Wik gives an accessible description: “It resembles a winged lion. Pixiu is an earth and sea variation, particularly an influential and auspicious creature for wealth. It is said to have a voracious appetite towards only gold and silver. Therefore traditionally to the Chinese, Pixiu has always been regarded as an auspicious creature that possessed mystical power capable of drawing Cai Qi (財氣 wealth) from all directions.!...The myth of Pi Xiu tells that the creature violated a law of heaven, so the Jade Emperor punished it by restricting the pixiu’s diet to gold, and prevented the creature from defecating by sealing its anus. Thus, pixiu can only absorb gold, but cannot expel it. This is the origin of Pi Xiu’s status as a symbol of the acquisition and preservation of wealth..
In tribute to Pi Xiu’s ferocity and prowess in battle, ‘The Pi Xiu was synonymous with the army in ancient China.” The essence of the PiXiu is the ferociousness of appearance, the fat(full belly), and the absence of an anus- which a Chinese lady recently explained so well to me culminated in the expression and powerful meaning of “Can’t Lose”.
I hope you like this background. I love your image and have enjoyed your notes and the wonderful comments above.
