Beat of a different drum...

My heart beats to what rhythm? I ask, and where?
It’s the same at all pulse points, like sounds of a snare;

Yet, I have no drumsticks or pedals, it seems
as if nature has a part, in this beating scheme;

I will venture outside to investigate closer
connections to this pounding, and its composer;

I look to the sky, not the same rhythm there,
then look to the ground, and kneel as in prayer;

The beat’s getting stronger, so I lay down to rest,
the bass beating deeper, like out of my chest;

Caressing the Earth, soon the rhythm entwines
it comes from this planet – a harmony divine;

Convinced of the bond, between earth and sky,
I look up again, as Spirit Eagle flies by;

With drum made of elk hide, with my own hand,
I begin beating rhythm, for Mother Nature’s band;

I asked and pursued answers, until I believed
I deserved confirmation, so musically received;

I’ll become ‘her’ drum major and advocate peace,
so the beat goes on further than my nephews and niece.

Friday, September 18, 2009 at 7pm for one hour of drumming about 4 beats per second, which corresponds with Theta range of human brain activity.

The INTENTION: Focus on non-doctrinaire, non-political, non-religious intention. As we all drum we will hold this thought sending it around the planet and beyond on a not so silent pulse. As we celebrate, there are no enemies, only those whom we wish the following…

    Excellent TK! The poem is stunning and it beats like the rythym of the drum as you read it. I had the opportunity a few years ago to make a drum and decorate it. One of our instructors beat her drum and sang as we worked. It was one of the most exhilirating yet peaceful craft workshops I have ever been too!
    (I was pretty pleased with my drum too!)

    smiling BIGGGGGGGGGG – heck, just woke up my Mom drumming! Had my headphones on – she came in and started laughing as she saw I was smiling BIGGGGGG!!! I am on the 18th for sure – I believe!!     Wonderful verse Tammy … this is they type of drum I am determined to get, one day …. I have some leather hides here that I could make one from … are they easy to make … do you have a pattern and are there rituals for blessing it?

    thanks sis, this is elk hide and it took about 8 solid hours, have an old pattern that’s falling apart and yes there were some cleansing rituals done before drumming with it ;) xoxox ♥

    Sis, do you know If I buy one if I have to do the rituals before drumming or are they already done? Might be easier for me that way than making one as only have leather hides which I would have to cure down to make softer for use … I covered old chairs with the other pelts and they were pretty hard to work with.

    I would suggest you do a cleansing (Sage, cedar & sweetgrass) ritual before using a bought drum ~ they are alot of hard work to make ;) xoxox ♥

    when my friend maggie and i .attended a north amercan indian pow wow in Bristol the chief bestowed an honour on her before she passed over he allwed us to dance in circle dance and they drummed and chanted happy birthday to her it is a beautifull memory for me…if you can spare the time please do a little drum for her from me ive entered her last moment picture in your group sisterhood x

    I really like all the symbols on your drum :) I have a drum too but mine is round, made in the tradition of the Sioux. Shamanism is the path I have chosen as it so speaks to me, it holds deep meaning. I especially connect with the Celtic perspective and now that I moved to the UK I am near so many sacred sites it’s the best! Anyway, just a bit of sharing, your drum inspired me :) Your poem is beautiful!
