ENGLISH

The present church was built in 1850 as a remake of a previous building built in 1632, and it’s annexed to the Clarisses’ convent. The first religious construction date back to 13th Century and we hear of it in 1235 for the first time; it was named as Saint Mary.
When, in 1258, Pope Alexander IV did translate the body of Saint Rose there, the church was named as Santa Rosa.
This church was destroy around the half of 14th century, it was build again and it was embellished with Benozzo Gozzoli’s frescos (half of 15th century). The works in 1632 destroyed this frescos entirely, and we now have only the copies made by Fracesco Sabatini, made in watercolor, and conserved in the city museum.
In the middle of ’800 the church was build again in neoclassic style; in 1913 the dome was added, as projected by Architect Arnaldo Foschini, covered by majolicas, that was hidden by a plumb cover in a second time.
The Church, the annexed monastery e the near house where the tradition says the saint was born, make a big center of spiritually for the city of Viterbo, that honor Saint Rose as Patron and that every year, the 3th of September, celebrate her with the transportation of the Macchina.

ITALIANO
