There’s no railway crossing here anymore…

Marree (originally named Hergott Springs) was originally established to support workers on the Overland Telegraph Line. Later, Marree increased in importance (and population!) when it became the northern railhead of the Transcontinental Railway (otherwise known as Great Northern Railway, or the Ghan Line). Even though the railway was later extended north as far as Alice Springs, Marree remained prominent as the changeover station between the narrow and standard gauge railways.

In 1980, a new railway line was constructed further west (as the original railway line was prone to being cut by sand drifts and flood damage) and the population of Marree dwindled. The railway station is no longer in use, and Marree, though reduced in size and prominence, now serves as the ‘gateway’ to the Outback for travellers from South-East Australia. Marree is located at the junction of the Oodnadatta Track and Birdsville Track both of which once took camel, horse and foot traffic north from the railhead at Marree.
