Inside a large volcanic crater is the Lautan Pasir (Sea of Sand) and Gunung Bromo (Bromo Mountain), Taman Nasional Semeru – Bromo – Tengger (Semeru – Bromo – Tengger National Park) in Jawa Timur (East Java), Indonesia.
This is the view from Gunung Bromo towards another ‘hill’. Gunung Bromo and is one of Indonesia’s many active volcanoes. During the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011, it became more active than usual, releasing thick clouds of dark smoke and blanketting the surrounding region with ash (as can be seen in this image!).
In the foreground, you can see the staircase (which assists in the last section of the climb to the crater rim) has had to be ‘dug’ out of the lava/mud flow from the recent activity.
