This old neon sign is just a few blocks away from my apartment. I pass it quite often, and saw it deteriorate over the years. Neon signs are more rare here these days, and I thought this one would be taken to the junk yard soon, so I got out and photographed it with my Hasselblad.
As I stood there waiting for my exposure to finish, a man in his fifties approached me. I could tell he had had a few drinks and was prepared for a type of “conversation” I’d rather avoid. But the man was very friendly and told me he knew the guy who had built this neon sign. His name was Eje and he was a short, stout man with “fists of steel”. A boxer in his younger years, apparently. The nice man thought it was good that I photographed the sign, and we agreed it would not hang there for long. And sure enough, just a few weeks later it was removed.
But I was in for a surprise. A few months later the sign reappeared in beautiful condition. I guess more people than I like neon signs.
