Real Life and Reputation Vs. Cuddly Cats?

When I studied photography, many of my teachers would share with myself and fellow students why a photo didn’t quite work, what would help, be it little or large. No-one on redbubble offers any constructive criticism. It’s a little bit ‘Disney’. I wouldn’t go slit my wrists if some-one suggested an alternative appreciation of an image i’d captured.

I suppose it’s a little like “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” However, I don’t think you are a bad person for suggesting that a picture of someone’s fucking pussycat should maybe not ‘cut it’ on a website that claims to be an ‘Online Artistic Community’.

Reputation Anyone?

    Hi Tim,
The RedBubble comments ideology is a bit like the methods used to train dogs! ;) Basically, dogs train much easier with rewards rather than scolding – I’m told it works with kids too! Some artists get very touch if even criticised mildly – call it artistic temperament!
There is a Forum for those who would prefer some “serious” critique here

As I understand it, a special gallery for snapshots is on the cards (may be wrong, quite possibly, nay, probably). Can you hold on a little longer before consigning the site to the sugar-sweet scrap heap of death?

I see your point Tim, however some of the contibutors may not feel qualified to give a critique…..me included.
    If I luv it I comment – if I don’t (for whatever reason) I don’t.
Although, if any photography teachers wanted to offer critiques I’m sure they would be appreciated.

Sharon makes a good point. I know that if I post something and it’s ignored, I get the message. I don’t need someone to say it’s crap.

Then, if I wanted to know why it was crap, i’d go to the appropriate forum.

Criticism certainly has its place but you would have to be sure that any criticism was appropriate and constructive and not simply a reflection of the viewer’s taste or a simple snide comment.

I’m with Sharon and pinkelephant. I don’t feel qualified to chip in with negative comments simply because I don’t like something or think it’s a load of rubbish. On the other hand, if I like it I’m happy to say so. But, I still hold out a slim hope that if nobody comments on my stuff it’s because they haven’t found it yet, rather than because it’s crap.

Of course that’s a plausible explanation, Bernd. Unfortunately, I have a paraniod personality.

Hey pink elephant, not sure where ‘sugar-sweet scrap heap of death’ comes from??? I think Redbubble is an awesome creation wth great growth and lasting potential. In fact, I mention it to anyone who enjoy the art of photography (this included many people on my recent trip 2 New York). In any case, ‘sugar-sweet scrap heap of death’ is a pretty good turn of phrase. I’d still keep it, but for an appropriate application.

Really impressed that so many responses in a short while. Love the passion people. Very cool. (Love my dogs too – but you won’t see them on redbubble…)

To Graeme, thanks for link. Didn’t know about forum.

I was under the impression that if you wanted some critical criticism you use the critique forum.

A good system is someone can submit their photos for critique if they wanted it to be critique.

But I do agree with Tim’s comment that most of the feedback are ….errr….mostly nice and I’ll rather someone told me what could be improved. I can take criticism on everything except bike riding skills and my cat photos. You can only say good things about them :P

Sorry, Tim. I tend to get a little carried away, usually to a place of no propriety. Disney/saccharine/sweet….

I’m glad you are an enthusiastic supporter of RB, it’s important to have people who don’t hesitate to start discussions like this one.

Hmm, I do agree with the site being on the sweet side, however that’s one reason I feel quite comfortable and well looked after here…i’m sure i’m not alone in saying that most people here have a fragile ego when it comes to something they’ve created and as pinkelephant stated, if we get hardly any comments on a picture we’ll probably get the idea somewhat. there are so many forums out in the big wide web world where people have foul language and alter egos with web rage, I think a site where so many people seem to get along this well, even if it is a bit Disney, is almost a miracle in sophistication.
That said, along with everyone elses comments, if you do want constructive critisiscm, there is that forum to post to…
