"how long have DVD's been with us..."
The poster edition of the original vector drawn photographic print series I made earlier this year. All VHS covers were hand drawn from original images (it took ages).
The rap (Abridged):
Do you remember when your VCR broke and you decided not to get another because they were sort of old technology? DVD was replacing VHS and you could probably buy the shows you wanted as season sets on DVD soon. Have they released those shows yet? Maybe you started watching different stuff because they didn’t release them? I don’t know, but many films aren’t being replaced on DVD at my local video shop when the VHS copy dies … I can’t find Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure in any DVD rental place… and find me The Last Star Fighter while you’re looking. I loved that movie!
Things look right on VHS, The Dark Crystal, Star Wars, Alien, Thomas the Tank Engine, Sooty, all better on tape, darker, warmer, grainier. We’ve lost something here, it’s changed, it ain’t cool.

The Last Star Fighter! Sooty!! ahh, this is such a great piece… now if we could all get The Curiosity Show on vid the ads paused out, the world would be such a better place!! :)
Tim Andrew replied

I’ve nearly worn out Big Top Pee Wee and about 6 years worth of RAGE. The Vector Love is large my child.

Yeah rage tapes! I had the Ramones special, when Joey died, a whole bunch or weird indie and punk marathons… all sort of left behind now
Jordan Clarke
omg this brings back memories…
Tim Andrew replied
Hey Jordan, glad you like ‘em. You’ve got some really nice work in your portfolio. Your name was familiar so I checked and discovered we’re myspace friends already. how bout that…? -T
Jordan Clarke
I know! I saw your name in the challenge – and it called to mind your profile pic – the animated decapitated head. Hard to forget…haha

Who woulda thunk it?
The things we take for granted.
All those hours of rage I, too, thought I’d just watch over and over and…
jemimalovesbigted

jemimalovesbigted
oh and by the way, I still have VHS and I still watch it….
p.s. I know the Dark Crystal by heart and that was my first ever owned VHS…
Tim Andrew replied
Thanks Jemima, Glad you like em and you still kick it old school VHS style.

I own Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure on DVD, but I do understand what you’re saying! Amazing artwork!!!

cool collection mate, well done

Agreed Tim. Tapes are so much better. Congratulations on making the home page!

i love this image. but, VHS was the lesser of even tape. Beta was superior, but was edged out some how. RIP VHS.
Nick Monfries
great work, and i understand where you’re coming from about dvd just not being the same sometimes. And now we’ve got this blu-ray BS. It’s 10 times worse!
blueeyesjus
Great image Tim, my VHS did work till an old monty python tape got stuck in it..oh an i have to agree with mylesaway Beta was better it just goes to show how effective ‘agressive marketing’ can be

Great rendering! I bet it did take hours! Enjoyed the lament for VHS too. I know how you feel, I thought the Last Starfighter was awesome too! My dad is a classic movie buff, and so many are not on DVD he still has tapes and uses them constantly. Many of your covers look familar. :)

Great idea, but could you be infringing copyright, given that you “copied” the insignia etc from an original, then put it up for sale? I am no copyright specialist, but TDK or BASF have and you could face yourself with a lawsuit.

Please this is just concern for you, not to diminish your great effort and art
Tim Andrew replied
If that’s the case (and it’s less clear cut than one might expect, varies country to county etc), I’m pretty small fry in the scheme of copyright infringement and I’d expect the suit wouldn’t be worth their effort. Also I’m not selling VHS tapes, so there isn’t any counterfeit issue to answer. And this is art, which does give me some latitude in these things. We shouldn’t forget the copyright infringement involving some pretty famous soup cans in the 60’s that was let slide on account of it being good publicity for the brand, maybe I’ll be that lucky… wait and see eh?

cool as – love it.

This does bring back memories, I reckon I’d bought most of these blank tapes at some stage in my youth – and the work that has gone into it is absolutely amazing and well worth the prestige of being on the homepage and the praise it’s received – and yes I would love it if they brought out all the old movies and TV shows on DVD…but I’m gladly a convert to DVD in this day and age and much prefer the clarity of what I’m watching, the ease of getting to the point I want, and the knowledge that my discs are far less likely to screw up in my cheap DVD player than all those tapes kept on doing in my cheap “tape munching” VCR hehe
Great work, though!
BluAlien
You know you could always burn your VHS to DVD or BluRay and that way you’ll have them like that forever.. grainieness and all.. Awesome piece of vector work here btw ;)
Pip Gerard
you know what I hate about DVD’s… the scratch way too easily! We’ve got so many that are unusable now. (I do recall though Video’s dying after being taped over and watched too many times though too).
I keep telling everybody.. DVD’s can’t be as good as it gets. They’ll probably find something new and we’ll have to spend another fortune buying all the new technology!!
Tim Andrew replied
“They’ll probably find something new and we’ll have to spend another fortune buying all the new technology!!” Yep, BluRay…
The useful thing about video was even if a tape was worn it could still be watchable, Not so with DVD. (and I doubt BluRay either).
