These large strikingly coloured lemurs inhabit the rainforest of eastern Madagascar. Their loud calls carry easily through the rainforest. Unlike other lemurs species, ruffed lemurs have six teats and can have six babies at once, but usually only two or three are born. Threats to their survival include destruction of their forest by humans for cultivation and making charcoal, hunting for meat and fur, and capture for the live animal trade.
