These little gray birds with white bellies show up in this region only during winters. They are a little bigger than a sparrow but hop arround and live in flocks like sparrows would. I’m not exactly sure what kind of bird it is but I’m assuming that they usually reside more up north.

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
December 2010

Addendum:
The bird has been identified with the help of fellow Redbubbler, it’s a slate colored junco.

I believe they are chickadees? Love the DOF Monika.

  • They look a little like a sparrow and a little like a chickadee, but I don’t think it’s either… We have sparrows and chickadees all year round here, but these little guys show up only for the winter and disappear for the summer.

We will just name them Winter Birds! That is good until someone that really knows birds.

  • That’s why I called him/her a “winter guest” for now. Hope someone will be able to identify them.

you’re more than welcome. juncos are my fav winter visitor as they come right into the city downtown where i live qand are just so active and cheery

  • Yes, they are energetic and cheery, it amazes me how they enjoy playing in snow (that we don’t have much of this winter). Completely opposit to our regular birds.
