Homer took this photo of this beautiful little Willet while we vacationed on Edisto Island, South Carolina in October, 2010.
Willets are large shorebirds of the Sandpiper family and can be seen foraging on mudflats or in shallow water.
Edisto Island is a beautiful, quiet family vacation spot with a rich history. The first known occupants of Edisto Island were the Edistow Indians, members of the Cusabo family of tribes. The Spanish arrived in the 1500’s with the English settlers following in the 1600’s. Planters grew rich producing Sea Island Cotton during the 1700’s until after the Civil War. Many of the plantation sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
