Wikipedia is publishing incomplete and misleading information. The article described above contains ‘cut and paste’ elements from the United States Department of State web site in the “International Religious Freedom Report 2002” released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor.
Wikipedia publishes that:
“Jehovah’s Witnesses have tax-free status” in subheading “Third Republic”, paragraph 5 of the “Religion in France” page.
The ‘Religious Freedom Report’ already cited is the basis for much of the Wikipedia page, however the report by the BDHRL coninues to state:
” Some observers are concerned about the scrutiny with which tax authorities have examined the financial records of some religious groups” in paragraph 6 of the section: “Restrictions on Religious Freedom”.
The’Report’, in that same section, also says that the French taxing authorities began an audit on the French Association of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1996. In 1998 the tax authorities of France formally assessed the 60 percent tax on donations received between September 1992 and August 1996 and collection actions included placing a lien on the property of the National Consistory of Jehovah’s Witnesses according to the same section of the’Report’.
Finally the ‘Report’ states:
“The Jehovah’s Witnesses were appealing the decision to the Court of Cassation (the country’s highest appeal body) at the end of the period covered by this report.”

I’ve noticed Wikip makes a lot of mistakes too Thom…they have an article on there about the town I grew up in and it is so totally wrong. When I sent an email to the guy who wrote it putting him straight about the place he wrote back saying he knew what I had told him was right but the local government wanted it put down as it was on Wikip. Let’s face it they are just setting up this world for the next generations based on lies…just like it’s been for the past few centuries :)
