"Voelklingen - Forbach", No. 4

plumbum: 79,9 mg/kg
cadmium: 0,5 mg/kg
arsenic: 1,6 mg/kg

This is a conceptual work on “landscape” consisting of 9 photos and a map. The city of Forbach/F had coal-mines. Voelklingen had an ironwork, now world cultural heritage. The coal from Forbach was burned at the ironworks. This process left invisible traces in the soil. After drawing a line on the map I walked along this line. My luggage was an old 5×7 inch-Plaubel. On each of the spots, marked on the map I took a photo of the surface of the earth and filled a bag with soil. The photographed spot measured 70×100 cm… Later on the prints should have this size, I reproduced the surface in 1:1 scale. The soil was examined by a lab specialized on environmental research. I asked, how much plumbum, arsenic and cadmium was in the soil. The results were scratched into the surfaces of my transparencies with the help of an etching-needle.
