"Voelklingen - Forbach", a photographic record
This is a conceptual work on “landscape” consisting of 9 photos and a map.
The city of Forbach/France had coal-mines. Voelklingen had an ironwork, shut in the eighties, now part of world cultural heritage. The coal from Forbach was burned at Voelklingen ironworks.
The process of melting ore left invisible traces in
the soil. (Invisibility is always interesting to me)
After drawing a line on the map I walked along this line. My luggage was an old 5×7 inch-Plaubel. On each of the spots, marked on the map I took a photo of the surface of the earth and filled a bag with a bit of soil. The photographed spot measured 70×100 cm. Later on the cibachrome prints should have this size, I reproduced the surface in 1 : 1 scale.
The soil was examined by a lab specialized on environmental research. I asked how much plumbum, arsenic and cadmium was in the soil taken from my photo spots. The results were scratched into the surfaces of my transparencies with the help of an etching-needle.
