When asked about photography, Gary Winogrand said, “I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed” – and I like that. Photography can render something mundane into something interesting if not necessarily beautiful. Winogrand is a favorite of mine along with William Klein, Jay Maisel, Mary Ellen Mark, William Eggleston, Stephen Shore practically the whole of Magnum and many of the Japanese photographers that emerged in the 70’s including Daido Moriyama and Noboyushi Araki.
As for yours truly, I’ll happily photograph a brick wall if there is something about the texture and the light but I’m just as intrigued by a cupcake or a forest or a swan. It’s difficult to explain why I photograph some of the things I do so I try not to rationalize it in case it becomes a conscious method. They say the unconscious mind drives creativity so lets say I sleepwalk when I make the image and wake up when I have to decide if the picture has merit.
Since my image “Searching for The Good Life” appeared on the front page 10th February it has sold five times. A pity they were all greeting card sales but one shouldn’t grumble. / I also picked up a poster sale on my image “Touts and Pick-Pockets” which means I’ve had more sales since mid-December 2012 with my new portfolio than I had for the whole of 2012 with…

I may have done this before since I first joined RB back in 2009 – oh well never mind. I came back in December 2012 and deleted my entire portfolio anyway and have since started uploading a brand new one. So here I am a part-time stock photographer, part-time writer and part-time consultant in various, spurious professions. / Catch up with me on Twitter @humanpilot – I’m not one of those twitter …
As well as being a photographer and bon vivant I’m also an aspiring writer in the horror genre (for now) and publish e-books under the pen name Ed Hurley through Amazon.com. Don’t be shy, take a look – I have very positive reviews so far. / I also like to quip and make merry japes (as well as provide useful information) which is why I’m on Twitter every day @humanpilot
