When asked about photography, Gary Winogrand said, “I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed” – and I like that. Photography can render something mundane into something interesting if not necessarily beautiful. Winogrand is a favorite of mine along with William Klein, Jay Maisel, Mary Ellen Mark, William Eggleston, Stephen Shore practically the whole of Magnum and many of the Japanese photographers that emerged in the 70’s including Daido Moriyama and Noboyushi Araki.

As for yours truly, I’ll happily photograph a brick wall if there is something about the texture and the light but I’m just as intrigued by a cupcake or a forest or a swan. They say the unconscious mind drives creativity so lets say I sleepwalk when I make the image and wake up when I have to decide if the picture has merit.
