Pigeon River - Leaf Season
9/25.09 – Friday
Last night I put the finishing touches on this landscape. The painting had languished in neglect because I had no room to paint something this size.
In the new studio digs, I can tackle larger works and am thrilled to get the chance to do so.
The painting was begun when I actually had some photo references. I finished it up from what I could remember of the spot. I was enchanted by the atmosphere that particular day. The down side was that I competed with about 6 GUZILLION other people for a chance to wander through the park. It was bumper-to-bumper traffic moving at 5 miles per hour when it moved. So after two hours of car fumes, I finally arrived at this serene section of the Pigeon River nestled in the heart of the Smokies.

I’m listening to a mellow version of New York state of mind as I look at this and somehow it fits the mood of this scene…don’t ask me why…maybe it’s the way Diane Shuur sings…this also brings me back to child hood…I spent many days down at the river, feet in the water, just enjoying nature…wonderful painting Michael…
thepaintedsoul replied
Thanks Janis. Last night I was listening to a bunch of folk music when I was working on this painting. Maybe that influenced me, or it could’ve been the vivid memories of my kids wandering among these stones in childhood bliss. Would love to experience that childhood bliss again. Maybe when I get senile. : >D
Appreciate your dropping by. Hopefully I will post a show completely made of new work in two weeks.
Have a great weekend!

Fantastic work Michael, back lighting in something like a heavily wooded area is plenty difficult and you have obviously mastered it beautifully.
thepaintedsoul replied
Thanks Jim. It was fun to see if I could pull this off without having a reference shot. : >D Have a great day! TPS

It’s beautiful Michael! You have captured the light and the perspective so well and the colours are stunning. Wonderful work. Get back in that studio immediately and produce heaps more!!!!!
thepaintedsoul replied
Hey Lynda, Good to hear from you. Glad you like it. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out since I had no photos of the spot to even get an idea of color, etc. But I did get the feel I was looking for in the painting. I am so thrilled that you can tell me to get back in the studio, and I actually get to do that! : >D Cheers! THE YANK!

thepaintedsoul replied
How kind of you to say so, Linda. This area is magical. . . and I’m looking forward to painting more in the new digs. Still a wreck, but I can see the floor in spots. LOL! Take care, TPS
Colin Cartwright
Interesting perspective on this stream and boulders. The contrasting light, amdist the trees, is superbly implied here.
And big – must have taken some paint!
I’ve only ever done one acrylic – and that was quite small.
thepaintedsoul replied
Hey Colin, Thanks for dropping by. Actually it didn’t take too much paint because I tend to paint things with thin layers overlaid on top of each other. : >D Appreciate your kind comment. Have a great week. Cheers! TPS
