Here is My Song

Here is My Song

This painting was done when I was working as an illustrator and trying to build a portfolio. Was trying to show my ability to paint a likeness of a celeb, so I chose young Joni Mitchell, the singer-songwriter. The face was a reference from one of her early albums. Thanks to my wife for posing for the body portion of the painting.

Original painting: 16” x 24”
acrylic on masonite

collection of the artist.

hi michael this is fabulous ….I am too scared to paint real people as I would not know where to start with the colours etc. and would not want mine to have the wrong colour skin ..if you get my meaning :-) another one of your amazing works of art for all to appreciate and soak in.

  • thepaintedsoul replied

Thank you Linda. I wanted to see what kind of response another one of my illustrations would make. : >D

Well here is a real Canadian reference….beautiful job here Michael…I love the glow on her skin, and her eyes hold the expression she often shows….that great sadness in her life…

  • thepaintedsoul replied

Thanks Janis. I had a crush on her when I was a kid. She has been a strong musical influence, as well. Since she is from Saskatoon, I’m hoping I did you Canadians proud by this illo. LOL!

That is some very fine painting my friend! WOW The likeness is perfect, and the two combined, even though I don’t know your wife , awesome work of art! A Work Of Excellence

  • thepaintedsoul replied

Thanks Gail. My wife and Joni Mitchell have similar body types, so it made it a lot easier to pull this off.

It is a beautiful painting , I can’t in all honesty say whether it is a good likeness or not as I have heard of Joni Mitchel but have no idea what she looks or looked like . But it is a great painting .

  • thepaintedsoul replied

Thanks Irene. I appreciate the comment. . . Joni is still alive and living, I believe in Vancouver. She still records, paints, and all sorts of other things. You ought to go to her website at www.jonimitchell.com She has several of her photos there and some really nice paintings to view, too. Cheers!

This is really gobsmackingly beautiful! The lighting is great, the colours are great, (especially the lights against the darks) and now I’ve got ‘the Ladies of the Canyon’ going around in my head!

  • thepaintedsoul replied

Oh you’re such a friend Lynda. I appreciate the fly-by my neck of the Bubble.

I knew it was Joni before I read you statement. This is so wonderfully made.

  • thepaintedsoul replied

WOW! Beth. That’s quite a compliment since Joni has so many different looks. This is her damsel-in-distress-she-could-be-blown-away-in-a-gentle breeze phase. I’ve got the DVD Woman of Heart and Mind, and it was fun to hear her commentary on this part of her career. There’s probably a part of me that will always “love” Joni Mitchell. Yep, my wife knows about it, too. LOL! Joni was part of this farm kid’s journey out of the sleep of childhood. Thanks for dropping by. Cheers!

Excellent work Michael, like izzybeth, I recognized Joni immediately. Love the color choices in this one.

  • thepaintedsoul replied

Hey Jim. . . glad it was so apparent. This is one area of painting where I feel the least sure of. I can paint a can or a car, but a person. . .Thanks!
