Thanks Arie. . .of all the paintings in the New Bern commission, this was the one I was most satisfied with the way it turned out.
Lynda Robinson
This is very impressive work. You have captured the shadows so well.

Thanks Lynda. . .I appreciate the observation. That was one of those aspects that made me happy with this painting.

Just beautiful – the shadows are so realistic. A truely stunning work of art

You know, this is one of my favorite paintings because it was a breakthrough painting for me.
Carole Russell
In what way was it a breakthrough?
thepaintedsoul replied
Short version: >) At the time I was working on this particular series of paintings I was feeling frustrated by the way my paintings turned out color-wise. It was here that I realized some little things about adding colors that aren’t in shadows necessarily, but create a harmonic resonance with the colors in light. The original painting really glows when you view it well-lit. The shadows were activated effectively by just splashing some complementary colors around.
Also, I had just turned to acrylic over oils and was having a beastly time getting used to the quick drying aspects and the way I would have to blend the colors to get the same effects.
(Gosh, what did the long version look like, right? LOL)
Thanks for asking.
Carole Russell
That’s funny!
I get what you mean though just putting the colour you see (or think you see) on the canvas just isn’t enough sometimes – it’s funny how the “right” shadow can really set off a picture – glad you had the breakthrough!
I’ve only ever used acrylic (except an unsatisfactory moment with watercolours) They have their ups and downs – why did you move from oils?
thepaintedsoul
It was a frustrating move in some ways because I love to fuss with passages in a painting and oils were what I cut my teeth on when painting. Also, the depth and luminosity you get with oils is wonderful.
But I finally moved to acrylics because there was more of an immediacy to acrylics. I could glaze a passage in a painting, then go back in within minutes to overglaze with another color.
With oils I’d have to wait until the next day. Oils made painting a sky w clouds so easy. Painting a sky w clouds in acrylics took me a long time to master. I’d get such hard edges and I just didn’t like the final effect. But over time I’ve gotten very comfortable with acrylics.; Learned some little hints to help slow dry times a bit when I’m working on a passage. The only thing I’m still not thrilled about with acrylics is the way they dry a different shade. Sometimes that’s meant having to completely repaint an entire sky in order to get the effect I want, because I can’t quite match the color from a previous painting session.
Maybe the big determining point is that acrylics have easier clean up and I’ve not had a studio space in years, (I paint in the kitchen on a board propped against a wall.) so it’s been easier to manage them. No leftover paint to store on a palette, etc.
I suppose if I were smart, I’d have gone into photography. Even more immediate. LOL!
Okay Carole, I’ve worn you out with this long diatribe. . . guess I love to talk about painting. : >D
Have a great week!
Cheers!
Hope your work is

I am speechless , for a change , this is just outstanding artwork .
thepaintedsoul replied
Thanks Irene. This painting was a watermark, as I had mentioned to Carole in one of the above posts. I miss seeing it. Wish it wasn’t in some private collection somewhere in Georgia.

This is stunningly beautiful! Wonderful richness of color and detail, and it’s as though you managed to bring
- to the daytime! -some of that magical twilight luminous colorI love in Maxfield Parrish paintings, so softly vibrant. I hope you take this in the most complimentary way … Your work is impressive. Best regards—

Hey Rich. . . that’s so funny. I am a huge Maxfield Parrish fan,, so to have one of my paintings mentioned in the same sentence as his name is one of the hightest compliments I can think of. His luminous style of painting has influenced me as an artist. Thanks so much.
