BLACK COFFEE
This work is loosely based on the song BLACK COFFEE which has been sung by a number of
singers Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, K.D.Laing and Julie London. Although I could’nt find
who wrote the song, anybody out there know who wrote it.
A few verses from the song BLACK COFFEE.
You know a man is born to love a woman
To work and slave to pay her debts
Just because he’s only human
To drown his past regrets
In coffee and cigarettes.
I’m moonin’ all the mornin’
Mournin’ all the night
In between it’s nicotine
Not much heart to fight
Black coffee …
Feelin’ low as the ground
I’m waitin’ for my baby
To maybe come around.
Gonna drown my past regrets
In some coffee and a few cigarettes

Reminds me of that Mexican magical realist book and movie where the cook put rose petals in the food and they brought love to the people.
Wonderful and very different kind of art work than what I’m used to.

Hi Larry,
The music for Black Coffee was written by Sonny Burke, the lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. The song was published in 1948. Sarah Vaughan charted with this song in 1949 on Columbia.
Info thanks to Wikepedia. kd lang also did a version of this song on her Shadowlands albumn.

The rose emerging is the quintessence of bliss…though the world is graying outside to mean a terrible loneliness and bare soul, animated by the twrling smoke of the still birning buts of cigarretes.
But is has the magic of a heart , weak, almost drowning into a black liquid, bitter essence of pain, but yet.. palpitating and odorous. My senses have been awakaned… because more than the taste I love the scent of new made coffee…and though I rather hate tobacco smoke…the mixture is a dream of dry symbols for the queching tears that sometimes emerge from our inside….and need to vapour… and dry.
Rosa (beautiful, Larry)
Larry Butterworth replied
thanks Rosa, as of this point I am hiring you on as my official writer and spokeswoman, I just can’t get enough of your words and art. Hugs all around
