THE PRISONER OF TIME

THE PRISONER OF TIME

Infinity is a long time, especially towards the end. Quote by DAC

Art can be viewed much like a dream: when we go to sleep, we do not plan what we will dream. Yet, when we awaken from the dream, sometimes we attempt to psychoanalyze the dream’s meanings and how they relate to our lives. In some cases, analyzing our dreams for meaning can help us better understand ourselves. Perhaps the same metaphor can be used for Surrealist art. Surrealist artists who created their paintings may not have consciously planned the images they would use; yet, as an audience, we attempt to evoke meaning from the images in order to make sense of what the artist’s intention was. Doing this, we make sense of human nature and the relativity of the world around us.

Excerpt from: Surrealism Symbols of Relativity by Andrea Martin

I’ve always love the surrealists paintings about relativity and time. Below is a collection of Surrealists work about this theme.

    Highly symbolic, dear Larry.
Oh…. I remember that you have a fancy for using clothing in your art vision.
Skin… using clothing as a symbol of something that is opening for the exterior.
Your inside is so then, like a window. But not to the reach of anyone.
Clothing as a need, and a metaphor of protection and being different. But you do not use it as such, but as a open barrier, your using is really mystical. The ego is wrapped with invisible webs. And then when opening this barrier you find that all your womb is barred. A door… with bars, like a jail, and no one can open the site of your passion and emotions, but a woman, with her loving hands trying to break the spell. I know it has not a reference but a likeness to the typical image of the “exhibitionist” as a perverted man who is trying to get excitement showing his viril member to unconcerned women. Do not laugh, please, if we go inside, we will find that is a need for commu icating.. a transversality of his needs. And the perversion comes from not using a mean but for an end…and this not finding which is the real need for the ending.
The heart and the womb in darkness.. but the rose on the buttonhole splendid. I have always found really elegant the way men put a flower on their clothing.
A touch of bloom… a touch of Anima. A desire that is coming from the Soul.
The intentional way of turning their not exhibitionist appeareance of clothing into an exhibition of tenderness and female extasis. And so then, the woman, cannot be offended, but attracted by the exquisite show of good taste.
And now we come to the Clock message. I can tell you that it has not provoked me so much as the rest. They seem to different stories for me. May be time here is what it is… a concept that has kidnapped the real blissing of the Here and Now, where all children live when they play, muse and feel their worlds.
Your mind shadows … and the clock becomes a crazy device, man made, without recognizing at last which is the real time, which arrow is pointing to the hours, or the minutes… and how many are in course right now…so… in you inside…the intense effort for abolishing Time as a concept and just living it as a cycle of Life-Death-Life…
Precious and utmost interesting. I have had a good time pondering and letting myself be driven by its mystery.
    Have a hug Larry

This is my first time viewing your work Larry…I’ve happily stumbled upon a really wonderful piece here. Beautifully executed and extremely thought-provoking! I also enjoyed reading Rosa’s articulate perspective.
Time is such a fluid thing and yet our body seems” to be locked into that intangible silent rotation of this rock we live upon. Open the “garment” which could be the skin…or perhaps it’s our own self-imposed withdrawal from really experiencing life…and our energy, thoughts, emotions, goals, and dreams,... unrestricted by the ticking clocks that so inadequately mark our passage through time…are always free-floating; they merge and blend within the collective spirit of humanity. And that is where we all connect, don’t we. *Bravo!!!

  • Larry Butterworth replied

thanks Karen for your comment, Yes Rosa is quite a force of nature, I just love her, Regards

Beautiful work, i would love to learn how to put my dreams onto paper in a visual form. My hope is that one day a machine is invented so that we can view them on a projector screen. That would be neat.
