Aladdin's Cave (4) by Themis

(AS IS, Finepix F31fd)
Near where I work there is this (very) old house, lost among the new concrete-and-steel buildings. I hope one day it will be restored to it’s former glory, but at the moment it’s used as exhibition and antiques shop – it’s like Aladdin’s cave, really. One room is dedicated to living room furniture, one to display collections (such as butterflies) and one to mirrors of all shapes and sizes, and so on. Going down to the basement, about half seems to be taken by the Bathroom Collection – tubs, sinks, cabinets…. Next which I found this mirror! As I said, Aladdin’s cave…
(The place is Brunswick House near Vauxhall Station in London – see the English Heritage entry, the company is Lassco, and most of the objects are reclaimed from (really) old houses being renovated)

Great find and composition. I like the contrast of foreground and background. Well done. Rachel.

  • Thank you – one of the fastest comments I ever got :-) I did a double-take when I saw this mirror, the etched fish made it something to see :-) If we had where to put it, I would’ve seriously considered buying it :-) Thanks again for your visit and feedback, much appreciated (BTW, I’ve been trying to send this reply for a while now, you may get multiple copies – apologies if you do)

The fish were etched in the mirror? And were they gold, or was that your lighting? Art Deco, maybe?

  • I think it’s art deco – you’re right, the fish is etched on the mirror. The lighting is coming from a ceiling light, I positioned myself in such a way a to have it reflect on the rough surface rather than the shiny one. The colour is gold because I didn’t correct the white balance :-)
